Salary increases to compensate?
photo

I can only really say for sure that my salary HAS NOT been modified to reflect the ever increasing cost to me for having to come into the office. Come review time, a BIG discussion will be had about me working a couple days from home though.

I remember someone in my life telling me a while back that if the price of gas went over $0.60 CDN per liter, then they were just going to stop driving. Well, I lost touch with them but something tells me if they followed through on this promise, they have not moved since about 2001. This makes me chuckle. I am the first to say that I do not like the approach to fuel pricing, however everybody knows we are so dependent on fuel (ultimately in this case OIL) that the gas producers and distributors can set it at whatever level they want because we need it. The government is not going to do a damn thing about it. Unless of course there are obvious signs of collusion. Other than that, they will just give themselves nice fat raises so their pocketbooks are not impacted and charge us...the little people. Welcome to a democracy.

Looking at the attached, it also makes me laugh a little.  Fuel in the USA has always been less expensive than in Canada.  Anyone out there who is doing the math, there is approximately a 20% difference in price...most excellent for us Canadians.  Wait a minute, ours is the higher...HEY!!!  Maybe our price should go down to match (or theirs up to match although this is the less preferred approach).  For my argument here, I am very glad I could not add the European cost of fuel which is much higher than Canada's.

So what do we as Americans or Canadians (or both) do? Do we boycott a producer? No because the rest will get even fatter. Do we boycott all fuel purchases on a given day? No because they will make more money the day before and after. Not to sound like a defeated victim, but there is nothing we can do. We can write our governement, and hope that someday they get up and do something. All I know is that my job is costing me twice as much now in fuel costs and for a commuter (2 hours a day), that means a lot.

Hi Steve,
I share your perspective, but here in the States, writing to a politician is like trying to teach a pig to whistle. Best way to get their attention is by voting for the dude that wants to minimize our dependency on foreign oil and will provide fiscal support to alternative energy. As consumers we have to conserve best we can. I now commute on my motorcycle when the weather permits, but that won't work in the winter. Telecommuting would be helpful, but I work under a government contract and they're not too flexible. Home heating this winter will also be a challenge. We looked into solar, but it's just not cost effective at this time in the area of New England where we live. Guess we'll just have to hunker down under the covers when the lights go off.
