OK, so I got underwater here for the first time of the year. We went to Cedar Hill for 2 shore dives and had a great time. These were the first cold water dives and the first since getting gear servcied so we made them reasonably shallow as a precaution. There were no issues underwater but I am glad just the same as there were equipment issues that "could have" happened. As I was putting my gear away after the second dive, I noticed that my dive computer was not screwed in tight to the First Stage. So, I know that this would not have stopped air delivery or anything but to lose an air integrated computer at depth is still not a good thing. Since I know the area so well, I could have easily ascended to what I figured was 10 feet and simply remained submerged and swam to our exit point safely. From a shallow depth, I could very easily make the surface in almost any scenario and this keeps me submerged and away from boaters.
Now I have to figure out what I am going to do with my LDS because I have been loyal to him for a while and seen more and more things go wrong with my things and with others. Unfortunately this is not the first equipment issue I have seen and I feel I am now at a point where I need to move my business for my own safety. How would you handle this?
As for the dives this weekend, they were a bit of a shock. I have done a lot of cold water dives but the first ones after a period away are always a shock. So the water was about 63 degrees on the surface and 57 degrees at a depth of 40 feet. It was amazing just how cold the water was on my face at first and the first trickle that went down my back (I am obviously diving wet). I could have screamed. The very quickly I got back into the swing and realized that it is simply a first time shock and is really not that cold. Now, I was starting to get cold at about 20 minutes into our second dive. Both dives totaled about 1 hr 35 mins below the surface so it is understandable that one would get cold after a while. Again, it is simply the initial shock.
This coming weekend I expect we will be diving at Gulliver'sLake so that is good. It is not my favourite spot to dive but to get my girlfriends time underwater increased it is a good spot. She is more of a warm water diver so the temperatures at Gulliver's are more suitable (heck they are almost Carribean water temperatures). It really is a good spot to go and get comfortable with diving, new gear etc.. And it is only half an hour away as opposed to 2 hours.....that is always a big plus.
