MEEP! MEEP! goes the roadrunner

Well, we got to dive today at Gullivers Lake and it was as expected. The water was a balmy 77 degrees and we were lucky to reach 21 feet in the murky “living” water. We were unfortunately, the only 2 certified divers there other than those that were doing open water dives with about 30 students. Can you say visibility reduced due to student? I am sure you can. Anybody that has ever dove with a group of “newbies” knows what I am speaking of. Do not get me wrong. I know that new divers have buoyancy problems and will therefore kick up the sediment from the bottom. Heck, I was there myself. Experience and persistence are about the only sure fire way to correct and improve your buoyancy. I am OK with that and think it is great that so many people are getting into the sport. Every time some poor schlubb is unfortunate enough to ask me a question about scuba diving, they get WWWAAAAYYYYY more than they asked for. I am definitely a walking sales pitch for diving.

One thing I am not OK with though….weight belts off the head. Again, anybody who has dove before will likely understand but say “HUH?????”. Here I am today swimming along in about 18 feet of water minding my own business, just trying to make sure that we stay together, enjoy our dives and make it back to our entry point. Have you ever seen when the heavy items get dropped onto the coyote in the roadrunner cartoons? Well, as I am swimming along, a weight belt (with weight on it) drops to the bottom not two feet directly in front of me. ZOINKS!!!!

Had I been two feet quicker, I would have had a 10 pound weight crack my skull from the surface. And for me, the worst part was that none of the students or instructors on the surface seemed to concerned about it….I grabbed the belt and almost went to the surface with it and then figured “forget it”…consider it a learning experience for them. Just another thing that can happen when scuba diving. I am counting on next weekend being able to dive Cedar Hill again.
