New Dive Site Strategy

OK so I am wondering if all of the possible shore dive sites have been explored and either publicized OR ruled out? I cannot believe that living where I do in Southern Ontario, there are no new dive options. It is possible that every possibility has been tried, and the only ones that were good dives have been publicized but I doubt it. I think there are people out there that know of other sites that are keeping them secret so that their piece of heaven does not get over-run with divers. Either that, or there are spots out there that nobody has even thought to dive.

Well, I am not going to accept status quo and will continue to look for new sites. I am increasing my arsenal of tools to be used for this very act and will hopefully have a couple of wins in the near future. I do hope to find a way of sharing this information with people because I want all divers to benefit from it.

It helps that there is VERY little in the way of advertising for local dive sites. This is something I plan to correct. As indicated, I plan to find a way of sharing this information with fellow divers. Hopefully when I do this, I can provide a lot of information on the site to make the first couple of dives easier and more enjoyable for those trying them out. Today, it seems that there are a couple of websites that list SOME sites in this area, and some books that list tons of Charter Only sites…..I want to provide you with a true “local” shore diving list. A list of sites that you could go to anytime and jump in as long as you have a tankful of air.

Here is a catch with this plan of mine. I have said it in many different places, I dive to be underwater. I do not dive to push the limits of my training by constantly trying to go deeper, or do something else close to the edge. I do not need a site that has tons of wrecks or sunken treasures to enjoy the dive. I want to dive so that I am underwater. If there is lots of exciting things to see or do beneath the surface then that is a bonus. Therefore, my idea of a good dive site may be slightly different than what your idea is. For this reason, I will come up with some way of conveying a neutral perspective of the site.

What is your take on this whole scenario? Are you an adventurer that always wanted new sites?

Hi, I noticed that you are interested in diving the St Mary's quarrys. Having grown up in stratford which is like 15 min away, I'm very familiar with them as I used to swim there all the time. They did alow diving a number of years ago and there are the remains of some of the heavy quarry equpment to see. Unfortunately the town does not alow diving any longer since they started using the quarrys as a drinking water reservoir. They still alow swimming though. Not exactly sure why they don't aloww diving anymore, but havn't alowed it for more than 10 years now.

Thanks for the note Jason. Unfortunately I heard back from the town of St. Mary's and got the bad news. I had heard about the site originally in a book about diving in Southern Ontario and obviously it is out of date. So we as a group are down one site. So, we just have to keep trying to find new sites.
