Have you ever tried something out and enjoyed it so much it turned into an all consuming passion? I think it is safe to say that that is exactly what happened to me with Scuba Diving. It is also what has since happened to me where photography is concerned. I have fallen for both underwater and topside photography.
It is very difficult for a person to learn to take pictures (or the “Art of Photography”) because it has been dumbed down so much with Point and Shoot camera. The P&S camera is simply a more elaborate (in some ways) Polaroid camera. The picture taker needs to have very little involvement in the camera settings if they do not want to
I grew up not caring even a little bit about cameras and taking pictures. Then, the very year that I got Scuba certified, I coincidentally purchased my first camera (a Canon Powershot S50). This was a pretty good camera at the time and after reading up a bit on it after purchase, I saw an accessory for taking it with me diving. Well, DUH!?!?!? Of course I needed to have it immediately. It was such a simple little chunk of plastic but it was my favourite new toy. From pretty much the second that I got the camera and the housing, I turned into the ultimate tourist (no matter where I was). I was seeing a possible perfect picture in every place, around every corner and beneath every rock.
Well, I have since upgraded a little and I would like to think I have gotten a little bit better, I still am unable to operate a camera in manual mode without a hefty helping of luck. But, looking at my pictures today from 5 years ago……big difference. I even have enough pictures which I want to look at all the time so I made a calendar.
This was done so that I can enjoy them all the time and not with the thought that others can enjoy it. But, I have ordered mine so if someone else wants to, then they can.
Someday soon I hope I am able to get myself into a new SLR camera but costs prohibit it for now. I am already snapping pictures at everything (above and below the surface) so I can only imagine if I had a great camera with lots of super nice lenses. Oh well, for now I have nothing to worry about.
